Reflecting Mercury
acrylic paint and alcohol ink on steel sphere, 12 in diameter, 2024

Half of this sculpture is painted to recreate a detailed image of Mercury’s surface from the MESSENGER mission. The other half is a mirror-finish steel, over which I wrote cultural associations we have with this planet: the Roman god Mercury, the Greek god Hermes, a definition for the word mercurial, along with various words and symbols. The MESSENGER image is in “false color,” highlighting chemical, mineralogical, and physical variations that are true to Mercury’s surface. The mirrored side embraces our human projections onto how we interpret this planet.

When the levees fail
Road atlas page of West Dallas, acrylic ink on polypropylene, 8 x 10.75 in, 2021

The painted layer of this artwork represents the flood plain of the Trinity River before levees were installed. This encompasses my studio and where a majority of art galleries operate, and many neighborhoods continuing west and north.

Titan and Hyperion
acrylic ink and acrylic paint on acrylic, 20 x 28 in, 2024

Titan and Hyperion are moons of Saturn, and the two are in a pattern of orbital resonance. Despite their massive size difference, both of them are changed by the gravity of the other.
